Determination vs. Self-Discipline
Thursday, August 31st, 2006So I was talking to a friend this morning about the difference between these two terms (ok it was my trainer Karl, who just rocks) and it really made me think. Self-Discipline, which I seem to be sorely lacking lately, and Determination, which I seem to have an overabundance of, are terms that I always assumed went hand in hand, I just never really considered that they might indeed, not be bosum buddies. Karl commented to me that he would rather see someone with determination than self-discipline….hmmm, what does that mean? Most of us raised in a Judeo-Christian based culture were always told that if you work hard and are disciplined, you will succeed. But maybe that’s not necesarily true, maybe shear will and utter determination can make us succeed even if we don’t have that perfect disciplined training, education, experience, whatever. Someone that I used to really like (?!) criticized me by saying “you just do whatever you want to do, don’t you” which mystified me ’cause I didn’t consider that was such a bad thing. I guess that is the determination talking there. Anyway, I guess that determination is the reason why the underdog wins, the longshot comes in, the soldier survives the battle, the cancer patient lives stronger, and Sisyphus continues to roll that boulder up the hill, even knowing that it is his fate to watch it smack him in the ass as it rolls down every day…then again, maybe hope and determination are better kindred spirits, then again, maybe I have too much time on my hands to think about all this and need a job….
send your job offers to me at dwm@dyanamarlett.com, then again, I really can’t start until March 2007, maybe, sort of…. I’mma climbing a couple little mountains b’tween now and then, let’s just call it a June 2007 start date? wish me luck and a current income would help the cause…D
